Lee Evans was born in Avonmouth, Bristol, England. he went to secondary school in Billericay, Essex, at The Billericay School. After a spell as a boxer, and two years at art school in Essex, Lee decided to follow in his father's footsteps in the entertainment business. In his teens he moved to Rhyl in Wales and played drums in a punk band that were, according to him 'crap'. Early on in his stand-up career he was offered to perform in a talent show in America. He was the only Englishman on the bill and ended up winning. The first four years were spent touring working men's clubs, the next five on the alternative circuit. Like a lot of now-established comics, his break came in 1988 at the Edinburgh Festival.

He is married to Heather Evans (they married when he was only 17 in 1981), and they have a daughter, Mollie (born 1994). He currently resides near Billericay in Essex.
